Simple as ABC #5
For the last 5 years, Brussels-based artist Thomas Bellinck has been working on SIMPLE AS ABC, a growing series of performances and installations that focus on what he calls “the European mobility management machine”. Digging deeper into his own international passport privileges, his works zoom in on how complex processes produce basic violence, facilitating the movement of some people, while at the same time criminalising the movement of others. Every installment takes a different form, from a theatrical essay about smell-based border detection technology or an interview-musical about the digitisation of border control to a museum displaying present-day practices of human hunting. Especially for Burgtheater, Thomas Bellinck has developed SIMPLE AS ABC #5: MOBILITY MANAGEMENT MACHINE. The lecture performance will invite the audience to dive into five years of artistic research and encounters with EU officials, border guards, people smugglers and experts who have been physically and psychologically subjected to the EU external border that Bellinck – as an EU citizen – helps to construct on a daily basis.
