Peter Simonischek
Peter Simonischek, born in Graz in 1946, first studied architecture and then drama at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. As a student he already performed at the Schauspielhaus in Graz. Engagements at the Stadttheater St. Gallen, Stadttheater Bern, in Darmstadt and at the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf followed. From 1979 to 1999 he was a member of the ensemble at the Schaubühne in Berlin. Peter Simonischek played the title role in Jedermann (Everyman) in Salzburg from 2002 to 2009. He joined the Burgtheater ensemble in the 1999/2000 season and has remained ever since. In 2018 he received the Nestroy Theatre Award in the Best Male Actor category for his portrayal of Afzal in The Who and the What by Ayad Akhtar at the Akademietheater. Since 2011 he can regularly be seen as Frosch in Die Fledermaus (The Bat) at the Vienna State Opera. He often acts in film and TV productions, and various radio dramas and audio books feature his distinctive voice. Peter Simonischek became an honorary member of the Burgtheater in 2019.
He died on May 29th 2023 at the age of 76 - we mourn the passing of our honorary member Peter Simonischek. more
