Martin Schwab

Martin Schwab, born in Möckmühl in 1937, trained at the Max Reinhardt School in (West) Berlin, before switching to the Max Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna in 1962. Engagements at the Staatstheater in Oldenburg, Theater Ulm, Staatstheater Stuttgart, Schauspielhaus Bochum and Schauspiel Frankfurt followed. He has been a permanent member of the Burgtheater ensemble since 1987. Martin Schwab is passionate about the combination of music and language, as evidenced by his many collaborations with music ensembles. In 1992 Schwab was awarded the Josef Kainz Medal of the City of Vienna, and in 2000 he received the Nestroy Theatre Prize in the Best Supporting Role category for his portrayal of the bishop in Grillparzer’s Weh dem, der lügt! (Woe to Him Who Lies), directed by Martin Kušej at the Burgtheater in Vienna. In 2003 he was awarded the Golden Cross for Services rendered to the Federal State of Vienna. In 2005 he was given the title of Kammerschauspieler, and in 2009 he became an honorary member of the Burgtheater.
