Moved by History
The philosopher and cultural critic Boris Buden presents a historical city tour on resistance, nationalism and psychoanalysis
At the end of EUROPAMASCHINE, Burgtheater presents a unique tour through Vienna. The cultural critic and Freud expert Boris Buden takes the audience on a three-and-a-half hour walk to places of historical upheaval where the resistance against nationalist ideologies of violence has formed, where fugitives have joined forces or demonstrations for an open society have been organized.
On foot and by tram, Boris Buden and the audience will follow the traces of various progressive (and reactionary) movements back to 1848. The tour aims to confront two modes of movement through which a central conflict of our historical situation comes to light: the conflict between the almost unlimited freedom of movement of the privileged and an increasingly brutal border regime to which "the damned of the earth" are defencelessly exposed. The format of a sightseeing tour is a way of making history come alive: about migration and psychoanalysis, the fall of communism, Austria's past and present - and last but not least the future of Europe.
Boris Buden, himself a migrant from former Yugoslavia, describes his project as follows: "History does not follow a linear timeline. Neither does a personal biography. Instead, both often resemble the courses of compulsive repetition. Vienna is full of uncanny symptoms. Who better to interpret them than a theatre that takes to the streets?"
The opportunity to experience history together with a contemporary witness and a special guest is unique. This tour is not intended to be repeated, but is offered for this one time and only on this day. Acoustic amplifiers will be provided for each participant. We ask the audience to bring their own warm or rainproof clothing. Public transportation on the tour is included in the ticket price. The tour language is German.
